Growing up and through my early 20’s, I was always naturally “skinny”. I could eat whatever I wanted and it never affected me. I would work out on and off as I pleased, but was never consistent. My sister has worked out for as long as I can recall, and I remember making fun of her for doing it so much, as I never thought she really “needed to”. I would go to the gym off and on as I pleased and would work out to Beach Body videos at home, very inconsistently. Fast forward to 2011 when I had my first child. The weight came off quickly, but I was weak and had very little muscle. Finally in 2012, a friend asked me to go to No Limit with her on a Groupon deal. I’m a teacher, so I wasn’t excited about the idea of working out at 5:30am in order to be ready for the work day. But, I liked the idea of working out, and my LA fitness pass was clearly going to waste as I only went and used the elliptical maybe 2 times a week, so I decided to suck it up and go.
I got my butt kicked big time! I threw up at least twice during that month of bootcamp. I immediately loved it because I felt challenged in a way that I could never challenge myself in the gym (or using “Turbo Jam” videos). I also loved the camaraderie of the clients there. So, I attended on and off, as I could afford it, but when I got pregnant in 2013 I stopped going (bad excuse, I know). After my son was born, I decided to join an 8-week fat loss challenge with No Limit. I ate healthier than I ever have and attended bootcamps 5 times per week. I made a lot of friends at No Limit during this time and truly looked forward to working out, even at 5:30am! I ended up losing 5 percent body fat during that time, which was incredibly motivating for me. I finally felt healthy and not “skinny fat”. I struggle with anxiety in my day-to-day life and I noticed a HUGE difference in my mental health from consistently working out as well. So with the notable changes I was seeing, I have attended consistently ever since. I even got my husband, Bobby, to join the No Limit family!
Last spring I decided that I wanted a little more out of my fitness journey, as I had hit a plateau in gaining strength and muscle. I approached Jeff to see if he could take me on in Personal Training. As soon as a spot opened, I snagged it and couldn’t wait to get stronger. We set some goals and with Jeff’s expertise and guidance, I have gained a lot of muscle and have seen many noticeable positive changes, both in my physical and in my mental strength.
The greatest challenge in my fitness journey has been eliminating excuses and making my health one of my many priorities. I am incredibly busy, being a full-time high school teacher, a wife, and a mom to two awesome kids. This requires me to get up while it is still dark outside so that I can work out while they are still sleeping, or gather energy to go after work for a PT session. I remember when I first started at No Limit making excuses here and there as to why I wasn’t at bootcamp, and Sako would not have it! I learned a quick lesson in not making excuses and just making it happen.
